"And do this, understanding the present time. The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed." Romans 13:11
The call to submit to governing authorities (13:1-7) and to love our fellow man (13:8-10) is bolstered by awareness that Jesus' return is approaching. Paul urged the first century believers to live with expectation of Jesus' coming and to let that expectation motivate holy living. In the same way every generation of believers must live with this expectation and motivation because in truth 'our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.' We do not know the exact day of His return but each passing day brings it one day closer.
Father, fill my heart with a joyful anticipation of Jesus' return that motivates a joyful daily obedience in my life.
