The Adventure of Discipleship

"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." Mark 1:17

The call to follow Jesus is a call to live in company with Him and to learn His mission. "Follow me" is an invitation to walk with Jesus both in private fellowship and in companionship with others who are walking in the same company. "I will make you fishers of men" is the call to learn His mission so that we might work alongside Him to bring men, women, boys, and girls into the life of Jesus and the company of disciples. Answering Jesus' call is a life consuming adventure not just a Sunday morning activity. Are you fully devoted?

Father, let the invitation and call of Jesus capture my imagination and devotion anew today. Redefine my relationship with You until it becomes fully what You desire.

I'm praying for you.
Pastor Mark

  1. Marks fast-pased Gospel moves us from the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, the preparation of John the Baptist, the baptism and temptation of Jesus and the calling of the disciples. What took Matthew 4 chapters to cover, Mark covers in one. From Jesus first entry into the synagogue at Capernaum, the people were amazed at His teaching and ability to heal. After healing Simon’s mother-in-law, the whole town gathered for Jesus to heal them. It was a full day and a full night, but Jesus got up very early in the morning and went to a solitary place to pray. Can there be a more pointed example for us? Prayer is a must. The very best solitary time is early (before the sun comes up) in the morning. When the disciples come looking for Him, Jesus takes this opportunity to share with them His mission. The healing of the man with leprosy ends the first chapter. Because the healed leper did not do as Jesus had instructed him to do, Jesus and His disciples had to stay in lonely places. All of our actions have repercussions. All of our actions make it better or worse for others.
