Promises in Context

"I can do everything through him who gives me strength." Philippians 4:13

"And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:19

We love to claim promises such as these! God is our gracious provider. Whether we need strength or other resources we can depend on Him. However, we need to make sure that we consider the context of the promise so that we rightly lay claim to the promise.

The promise of strength in Philippians 4:13 is for those who endure challenging situations in God's service as Paul had (vv.10-12). The promise of God's supply from His riches in Philippians 4:19 is for those who have generously committed their own riches to God's service as the Philippian Christians had (vv.14-18).

If we are serving God we can claim the promise of His strength for every situation we face. If we have committed our wealth to God's service we can claim the promise of His supply for our every need.

Father, I thank You for the glorious promises of Scripture and pray that You would help me to so live my life that I may claim these promises as my own.

I'm praying for you.

  1. Good Morning Pastor Mark,
Thank you again for the insight into these passages. In vs. 3 Paul did plead for them to help these woment "who have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel." I do believe that as we're out doing the will of Heavenly we can claim the promises He gives in His word that we may be able to accomplish is desires. vs.20 tells us who the final glory goes to, "To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen" May God bless you on this day Love in Christ Francie

  2. Pastor Mark,

These verses are so true.Either I have not gone through any trials since becoming a believer or GOD has given me the strength to not even notice them. All my troubles seem so meaningless and small. They do not seem like troubles at all.And since Dana and I have committed our finances to GOD,HE has blessed us beyond measure.Talk about Scripture coming to life!We want for nothing and still have abundance.

Holy Father, You are an awesome and mighty GOD.No one compares to You.I pray that every believer will draw on Your strength for every situation. And they will commit their finances to You.What better protector of one's life and treasures could we possibly have than the one who creates it all.
