"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God." Matthew 5:8
I want to see God! I want to see Him not just some day in eternity but now, today, in this life. I want to be keenly aware of His presence with me and alert to His activity around me. I want to walk in true fellowship with Him. A pure heart is the way--a heart of undivided loyalty, sincere motive, and holiness.
Father, grant me such a heart before You that I may not miss You today but that I might live this day fully with You.

Jesus has been baptized and tempted. He has preached, chosen His Disciples and healed the sick. Now, He begins to teach the guidelines of the Kingdom to His disciples. I can feel the excitement of a sit-down session with the Master, but these words have never before fallen on their ears like this. The Disciples were probably hushed in His presence, but I can hear the crowd murmuring – “What did He say?” Strange words from another world...Yes. Happy are the... And if that is not shocking enough He says, “Rejoice and be glad” in a context that life has taught them neither warrants or deserves anything close to that response. Yes, I think they were politely in shock at what was being said. Certainly they had never seen any “live” examples of this kind of life...until now. His teaching now hit squarely at life on a daily plane. Salt brings taste and light dispels darkness. An inner righteousness is better than an outward show or pretense. Then the section that exhorts me to always be a giver in relationships. Stockpiles of hurts and years of nurturing the past can often erupt in anger without much notice. Jesus says to be aware of what is going on inside. Look at the intents of the heart and mind. Judge it quickly and do the right thing which is preceded by right thinking. Be faithful to a living pattern higher than is expected by others. I wonder if I am letting God be God (judge) or am I doing much too much of that? Jesus is laying the foundation for a life worth living and He backed up His words with a living example.
ReplyDeleteThe Sermon on the Mount, oh how refreshing and encouraging these words are to my soul! This beatitude is one of the Lord's prerequisites for entry into heaven and yes to see God. ["Happy are the pure in heart, for they will see God."] The clouds of gloom and darkness that would entangle these chosen men and all Christians in service to the Christ could not then,or now cloud the Light from Heaven. Yes! Let us be happy, in whatever situation with clear hearts as we journey through this life to see and live with Christ, now and forever, eternally!
ReplyDeleteI really don't have any words of wisdom to impart, but something I saw that I had not saw before was the comparisons between this chapter and the 10 commandments. I have read this many times before. Isn't God wonderful in how we can read the same things over and over and get a new gem each time.
